Nusa Lembongan Island Facts

Nusa Lembongan is the second smallest island of the 3 Nusa Islands and houses approximately 5000 inhabitants. These inhabitants are spread over 8 km of the surface area of the island. Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan are separated by a shallow canal and are connected by a yellow bridge. The island thrives due to the tourism business and therefore, you will find tons of homestays, hotels, bars, and restaurants.

Around the islands, there is a wide variety of corals and colorful fish. The people on the islands try to conserve them with the help of a local NGO.

How To Get To Nusa Lembongan

Every day several boats go from Sanur, on the mainland of Bali, to the small Nusa Islands. You can either take a boat to Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Ceningan.

A boat trip to Nusa Lembongan takes about 30 to 40 minutes and costs between 200 and 250 thousand IDR for a returning ticket. Often these boat services include a pick up from your hotel to the harbor of Sanur, and a drop off at your hotel on Nusa Lembongan.  When you are wondering where to book a boat trip to Nusa Lembongan, ask a local where to do it. They often know somebody who arranges these boat trips and can hook you up with a contact.

Make sure you bring enough cash to the island as some ATMs run out of cash, and also don’t forget to bring your credit card. Read more Indonesia Essentials here.

How To Get Around On Nusa Lembongan

There are two main ways of transportation in Nusa Lembongan. You can either rent a motorbike or you can take a ride in a small taxi van. The roads on Nusa Lembongan are small, but great for cruising around with your motorbike.  When I’m in Indonesia, I always rent a motorbike because I love being flexible and able to go whenever when I want to.  Renting a motorbike on Nusa Lembongan will cost you about 70,000 IDR per day. Just like in Bali, almost every hotel or shop offers a motorbike rental.

Chill at Beach Clubs

All over Nusa Lembongan, there are amazing beach clubs with views over the sparkling blue water. Especially on the east side of Nusa Lembongan, you will find broad stretches of beach with fun and beautifully decorated bars with pools and delicious food.  I would advise you to walk along the beach on Nusa Lembongan and allow yourself to be surprised by all the fancy and cool bars you come across, like Ohana’s Beach Club!

Tip ➳ Canggu has some amazing Beach clubs too!

 Viewpoints On Bali

Nusa Lembongan is a small island close to the mainland of Bali. One thing that’s really cool about this, is that you can see Mount Agung, the highest volcano on Bali from Nusa Lembongan. This view is particularly beautiful from the viewpoint in the middle of Nusa Lembongan. This viewpoint is located on one of the highest spots on the island and provides an impressive view of both Nusa Lembongan itself, and Mount Agung on Bali.  Visit this viewpoint during sunset and let it take your breath away for a second.

Day-Trip To Nusa Penida

Of the three Nusa Islands, Nusa Penida is the largest one and makes a great day-trip. Expect to find impressive cliffs, gorgeous beaches, and abundant marine life on Nusa Penida. Some of the places you cannot miss are the limestone cliffs Kelingking and Angels Billabong. And the beaches crystal bay and diamond beach.

I would recommend you to do a 1-day organized trip to Nusa Penida from Nusa Lembongan. Or to explore the island yourself in 3-days. Check out the best spots on Nusa Penida here.

Swing At The Sand Bar

One of the most iconic swings on Nusa Dua is the pink swing at The Sand Bar. This bar is located on the beach on Nusa Ceningan and has several swings and a hammock to play with when you are there. Enjoy a cocktail on the lounge set and dive into the blue water.

Tip ➳ Make sure you go there during high tide, otherwise, there will almost be no water under the swings.

Enjoy A Bintang During Sunset

The sunsets on Nusa Lembongan are the most chill moments of the day, and what better way to watch the sunset with a real Indonesian drink. Bintang is a famous local beer and you can buy it almost everywhere. Usually, you pay between 50 and 70 K for a large Bintang (620 ml).

Surprise Your Tastebuds At Warung Pancer (The Best Warung On Nusa Lembongan)

To experience the best of the Indonesian kitchen, eating at a Warung (small family restaurants) is a must. However, not all the warungs on the island are just as good and therefore we tested out several. From all the warungs we’ve been to, there was one obvious winner: Warung Pancer. The food was incredible, there were fish options, the staff was super friendly and the food was cheap. So, check out Warung Pancer when you want to explore Indonesian cuisine.

Watch The Sunset At Devil’s Tears

The best spot to watch the sunset on Nusa Lembongan is Devil’s Tears. This is a limestone cliff on the west side of the island. Here the water is pushed against the porous rocks and spectacularly sprays up in the air. When you see this, you will feel the power of nature rushing through your body!

The holes in the stone fill up with water and when they drain, it almost looks like they are crying. When the water is calm, mirror-like pools appear, reflecting the colorful sunset sky.

My favorite thing about this place is the large contrast of the fierce power of the water and the peacefulness of it.

Tip ➳ Be aware of the sharp bedrock and wear suitable footwear.

Look For Mount Agung

Mount Agung is the largest active volcano in Bali and is also known as “the head of Bali”. In total this mountain is over 3,1 km high and when the sky is clear, you can see Mount Agung from the beach in Nusa Lembongan. It is very impressive to see such a massive mountain arise in between the clouds.

50 Shades Of Blue At The Blue Lagoon

For those people who love beautiful turquoise water, the blue lagoon is the place to be! The water has an insanely bright variety of blue colours (hence the name).

The Blue Lagoon is a cove surrounded by sharp limestone cliffs. The beach in the cove is white from the limestone and in combination with the minerals in the water, 50 shades of blue are created.

Tip ➳ Treat yourself to a stay in the Blue Lagoon

Watch The Surfers At Mahana Point

On the west side of Nusa Ceningan, close to the blue lagoon, you’ll find Mahana point. Mahana point is a known place for many surfers, and you can do a cliff jump here. Take a surf lesson and ride those bright blue waters, or enjoy watching the surfers from the viewpoint/restaurant.

 Walk The Yellow Bridge

In between the islands Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Cinegan you will find a bright yellow bridge! It’s made from steel and concrete and it’s the only connection between the two islands. The color makes the bridge stand out beautifully against the blue water.

This bridge is only used by motorbikes and by people on foot. So, start walking and check out this bridge by yourself.

 Kayak In The Mangrove Forest

On the Northern side of the island, there is a large mangrove forest. This mangrove forest acts as a natural barrier for coastal erosion and houses a large variety of species. Peddle during high tide with a kayak through this unique green oasis and see a totally different side of nature on Nusa Lembongan.

 Relax At Le Pirate

Le Pirate is the most Instagram-worthy bar/hotel on Nusa Lembongan and the perfect place to relax! Le Pirate has an infinity pool with a bamboo hut as a bar, adorable white and turquoise houses, and don’t forget the pink details! Go for a cocktail in the pool and enjoy the ocean view.

 Collect Shells At Secret Beach

One of the most beautiful beaches you need to visit in Nusa Lembongan is Secret Beach. This is a stretch of white sand and rocks and has a coral reef in front. My favorite thing to do on Secret Beach is collecting seashells. Many of them wash ashore on this beach and you can find them all along the waterline. On every beach, you can find seashells, but what makes Secret Beach more special is the size and abundance of the shells. And if you take a couple of home, you can make a necklace out of them to remember Nusa Lembongan by.

Tip ➳ You can also stay on Secret Beach

Discovery The Marine Life Around Nusa Lembongan

Besides all the cool stuff on the islands themselves, the sea around the island also houses treasures! The Marine life around the Nusa islands is still in very good shape, with loads of colorful fish species, bountiful corals, and don’t forget the turtles and manta rays! Explore this underwater paradise for yourself during a snorkeling trip.
