Day 1 – Feel Like A Princess At The Neuschwanstein Castle

The Neuschwanstein castle is a real fairytale castle and the first stop of this 7-day Bavaria & Tirol Road Trip. This Castle is a jewel in the rock, literally, as the castle is located in the mountain landscape of Bavaria, Germany. Being there gave me the feeling I was in a Cinderella movie.

Because of its rare beautify, the Neuschwanstein castle is one of the most popular castles in Europe. Neuschwanstein was build by King Ludwig II in 1886 in order to retreat from the public.

You can see the castle from multiple angles. But my favourite perspective is from the Marienbrücke bridge. When you arrive at the castle entrance you can walk past the castle itself, and after a nice 15 minutes walk through the forest, you arrive at the bridge. From here you can behold the castle and see it in all its glory. You can even take it a step further and hike up the mountain after the Marienbrücke. There is a path there that leads to an even higher viewpoint, which is also less crowded.

Pro Tip ➳ Do a day-trip to Burg Eltz Castle

The entrance to the Neuschwanstein Castle is 13 euros and involves a guided tour. During this tour you’ll be shown around the most impressive rooms of the castle. First you’ll visit the large hallway, the master bedroom, the dining room, a secret cave (which was insane!) and many more rooms.

Inside the castle you are not allowed to take photos. So, you have to do with my description ?. Every room has painted walls with loads of golden details, swans and there was even a sink with running water (which was super modern for this time).

There are 4 parking areas in the village close to the Neuschwanstein Castle. The parking costs 7 euros for the entire day, and you need to pay this in cash. From the parking you can either walk 30 minutes up to the castle along a beautiful, but a bit steep path through the forest. Or you can go with the alternative of taking a carriage ride, making this fairytales experience even more princess like.

Day 2 – Visit The Geroldsee And Seefeld

When you drive to the Geroldsee you will find yourself on a wildly curved route, with loads of epic views. The Geroldsee is a swimming lake in a valley in Tirol. You can park your car alongside the road and you can hike to the lake. There are beautiful grass covered hills with cows grazing on them, some cute wooden huts and a crystal clear lake. The Geroldsee is the most calming area of this Bavaria and Tirol road trip and perfect for a nice picnic. In the summer time you can jump in the lake, and swim around for a bit. Or you can go hiking around the lake.

What makes the Geroldsee so special is the incredible mountain backdrop and the “Sound of music” grass covered hills.

After the Geroldsee I’d recommend you to visit the little village Seefeld in Tirol. From the Geroldsee, this is only a 30 minute drive. Seefeld is a beautiful and luxurious village and in the village itself you’ll find many shops and nice restaurants. Therefore, Seefeld makes a nice lunch location and a perfect spot to try out a real Austrian apfelstrudle with vanilla sauce.

Accommodation Tip ➳ Stay In Seefeld

Day 3 – Explore The Eibsee And Mountain View

On the 3rd day on this road trip, we’ll drive back into Bavaria and visit the Eibsee. The Eibsee is one of the most beautiful clear lakes in Germany. Especially in the early mornings, this lakes will take your breath away. As the water will be a huge mirror, reflecting the Zugspitze mountain in the background. What makes this lake even more special is the fact that its located 1000 m above sea level. The lake is up to 32,5 m deep and in total covers an area of 1,8 km2. In the lake there are 8 little islands, making this spot even more picturesque.

The lake is surrounded by a wild and thick forest, home to squirrels, deers and many (hunting) birds.  In the summer this lake is the perfect place for a refreshing dip in the crystal waters. And in the winter/fall this lake is a wonderful destination for the hikers among us.

There is a large parking area besides the lake. Here you can park your car from 5 am until 22 pm for only 5 euros for the entire day.

Day 4 – Wander Around In Innsbruck

Innsbruck is one of the most famous cities of Austria. Many people know the golden roof and the Hofkerk. But there is a lot more to this city. The historical centre of Innsbruck has a very cozy feel about it, with shops, nice restaurants and tons of things to see. Wander around in this city, do some shopping and don’t forget to try one of the many bakeries.

Day 5/7 – Hiking In Ebbs

From Innsbruck it’s only a 1 hour drive to Ebbs in Kufstein, Tirol. The last few days of this Bavaria & Tirol road trip we’ll spend in here, in the mountains. Ebbs is located close to many ski areas and therefore creates a great hiking destination in the summer/fall! From the parking area in the village you can hike up and stay on one of the ski houses on the slopes. We stayed at the most beautiful hotel with a sauna and…… A Jacuzzi with mountain view! I recommend you to spend 2-3 days at the Berg’k’hof Kaisertal in Ebbs. During the day you can hike up the mountains and search for the best viewpoints. And in the evening it’s time to relax in the sauna and watch the stars from the jacuzzi. Because there are almost no villages in the surroundings, you can see a sky filled with stars almost every night.
