Beautiful Sunset Spots in Porto, Portugal
When you are in Porto there is one thing that you cannot miss, and that is to watch the sunset at one of the incredible viewpoints. Because the city is located on a set of hills there are many terraces that provide a look over the city and river. To make sure you visit the sunset spots in Porto, I’ve made a list.
- Miradouro da Serra do Pilar
- Garden of Morro
- Parque da Quinta da Macieirinha
- Saint Lawrence Church
- Miradouro da Vitoria

Miradouro da Serra do Pilar
On the South side of the Ponte Luis 1 bridge there is a church/monastery called Miradouro da Serra do Pilar. From the bridge it’s only a 10 minute walk up to the church. Miradouro da Serra do Pilar is located on one of the highest spots in Vila Nova de Gaia, the centre of the port producing region. And therefore provides a fantastic sunset view all over Porto.
When you arrive at the view point, there is a square in front of the church. There are a few trees and some benches. From there you can see all over Porto. You can spot the many churches on the skyline and enjoy the glistening of the river Douro that separates the 2 parts of the city. During sunset this spot is particularity beautiful, as you can see the sun drop in the river.

Garden of Morro
Very close to the church Miradouro da Serra do Pilar, there is a beautiful park. If you would like to do a little picnic during sunset, this is the place to be. There is a supermarket close by and there are stands where you can buy something to drink.
Imagine laying down on the grass, under a tree with a nice glass of port wine, some bread, grapes, cheeses AND a magical sunset view! That sounds like the perfect evening to me.

Parque da Quinta da Macieirinha
The hidden gem of sunset spots on Porto is Parque da Quinta da Macieirinha. This is a park on the west side of the city. Here you can see the sunset from an entirely different perspective. The view on the Ponte Da Arrabida bridge will not be disappointing, as the sun goes down behind this bridge.
There are benches, trees and grass, so this is also a lovely picnic spot and because not many people know this place, it’s very romantic.
P.S. This is my personal favourite sunset spot in Porto 😉

Saint Lawrence Church
On the hill side of Porto there is the church called Saint Lawrence Church. By the Portuguese this church is referred to as the Cricket’s Church. This name comes from the Jesuits who came to Lisbon in the 16th century and started their organisation is the Rua do Grilo or Cricket street. When the church in Porto was build, the priest had gotten the nickname cricket priest, which is still linked to the church until this very day.
On the outside, the church is very robust and sober, but the view is spectacular. Besides the church there is a terrace where you can see the river and the port houses on the south side of the river.

Miradouro da Vitoria
Last, but definitely not least is another hidden gem, called Miradouro da Vitoria! This is a little park besides one of the many churches in Porto. Because this park is very small and not a lot of people know this spot, there are less people. In other words, the perfect calm spot to enjoy the colour changes in the sky.
