Sunset Picknick On The Beach

The beach is one of the main reasons a lot of people come to Zeeland. This is an excellent reason, as it is our number 1 thing to do in Zeeland, the Netherlands. The beach is a wonderful place to enjoy the salty air and water, the dunes, and magical sunsets. You can even watch ships sail by, sometimes only a few meters away from the beach itself.  I especially love watching the sunset in Vlissingen, because you can see the sun go down in the North Sea. So, bring a blanket to sit on, a bottle of wine, and enjoy!

Eat Kibbeling

Kibbeling is the iconic food to eat on the Dutch coast. It is fried fish with a crunchy layer over it. You can get it on the market, at restaurants, or snack bars. In my opinion, the best place to eat kibbeling is on the Boulevard of Vlissingen. Here you can enjoy the food and the beautiful sea view. It is definitely my favorite Dutch food!

Visit Middelburg

If you want to visit a city, I highly recommend going to Middelburg. Middelburg is located on the island of Walcheren in Zeeland, and there are many fun things to do (A real hidden gem in the Netherlands). It feels like a miniature version of Amsterdam. It has beautiful canal houses, picturesque little streets, and cool historical architecture. Middelburg is the perfect city to wander the streets and constantly be surprised by beautiful buildings. You can climb the Lange Jan, go shopping, step into a boat that shows you around the canals, and much more.

Go Sailing on Lake Veere

If you like water sports, lake Veere is the place to be. Lake Veere is a beautiful lake in Zeeland, within cycling distance from Middelburg. You can go sailing or rent a motorboat to enjoy the water. After a fun time on the lake, I would recommend a nice lunch or dinner in the picturesque village of Veere. This is a little harbor village with a lot of history, lovely stores, and a great view over Lake Veere.

Do a Cycling Tour

If you want to be more active, you can do a cycling tour. Throughout Zeeland, there are many cycling routes. You can check out the different routes on VVV Zeeland and pick anyone you like. Along the cycling paths, signs direct you where to go, so you’ll always find your way. There are routes along the beaches, cute cities, lake Veere and many natural areas. There bike rentals in every village/city, and you can even rent an “NS bike” at the bigger train stations. Cycling is a great activity and a wonderful way to see the landscape of Zeeland. So, if you want to have a fun and active day, go and rent a bike. There are also options to rent an electric bike, making it a fun activity for everyone.

Explore Zierikzee

The other historic city in Zeeland is Zierikzee. This city is known for its monuments. There are over 500 monuments in this city, so a lot to see! Furthermore, you’ll find beautiful canal houses and a cozy harbor with 2 historic bridges iconic for this city! If you plan to go there, check if there is a day-market.

Picking Flowers

Zeeland houses a wide range of flower fields where you can enjoy a sea of colors and nice smells. The flower fields make the perfect spot to drink a nice cup of tea and pick a beautiful bouquet. You can buy a one-time ticket for a few euros (depending on the flower field) at the spot. But you can also buy a subscription for a few euros a month so that you can pick flowers throughout the entire year. This is definitely one of my favorite places to visit in Zeeland because I love flowers, and you get to bring home an incredible bouquet. It’s fun for families and solo travelers. Visiting these flower fields can easily be combined with a cycling trip.

P.S. These flower fields are also a great photo spot.

Dance at Concert at Sea

Every summer there is a music festival called Concert at Sea at the Brouwersdam. Concert At Sea is a concert given on the beach with many Dutch and international artists. The summer vibes, the music, the beach, and the dancing people make this concert a unique experience. You do have to be on time with buying your tickets because they are sold out very quickly. If you already know you want to go to Zeeland in the summer, I would definitely recommend looking into getting tickets for this concert.

Visit the Summer Markets and Events

During the summer, Zeeland hosts many events, all with a different theme. For example, there is the summer market on the boulevard of Vlissingen, and there is a carnival in the bigger cities, and much more. When you go to Zeeland in the summer, make sure to check the VVV Zeeland event calendar so you won’t miss a thing.

Explore Neetje Jans

100 years ago, almost 2/3 of Zeeland was part of the North Sea. The water-retaining structures that were built after the big flood in 1953 are imposing to see. At Neeltje Jans, you can learn about the big flood and even go into these water retaining structures. If you want to get a different perspective on Zeeland, Neeltje Jans is definitely a fun and educational place to go to. Besides the heavy structures, there are also fun activities for children like a wind turbine, a sea lion show, and a water park.
